Black broadcloth is all-purpose for when it comes to heavier weight winter wear. It can be used for coats as noted in the 1799 ad searching for Prince, a runaway, "...he possessed other old clothes, such as a black broad cloth coat..." or in the records of Moses who also took with him, "...a black broad cloth coat, and a dark coloured great coat..."
